Dopethrone

This Canadian sludge metal band has arguably done more than most to earn a reputation that they may find difficult to live down. The band was founded in 2008, and for years, the core members toured the DIY circuit constantly in order to make a name for themselves. This show will feature their music, with tracks including Scum Fuck Blues, Sludgekicker, Dry Hitter, Riff Dealer and Chameleon Witch. This performance was recorded at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, Wisconsin on February 11, 2024, opening for Torment. They opened with two songs from their 2024 album Broke Sabbath. They played a few cuts from their 2024 split with Fister as well as one cut from their 2024 compilation of greatest hits Deepest Hits. The band members’ music may have been inspired by the track Bong Cavern, on Wizard’s 2000 album Dopethrone, but this band has long since made a name for themselves in the underground metal world, building a cult following of fans worldwide.

Year of the Cobra

This doom metal band comes from Seattle and consists of the husband and wife duo Amy Tung Barrysmith on bass and vocals, and Johanes Barrysmith on drums. This is referred to as a “difficult duo”. Their fan favourites are “Battle of White Mountain”, “Prayer”, “Sleep”, “The Darkness”, and “Full Sails”. Their self-titled album came out in 2025, four years after their last album “Ash and Dust”. This album was released during the Chinese year of the metal pig, which coincidentally is also the Chinese Year of the Snake’s metal counterpart; hence the album title “Year of the Cobra”.

GRGL

This band is from Salt Lake City and they call their music sludge/doom metal. They have quite the apocalyptic style. They just released a Street Weepers EP that addresses the homeless situation in Salt Lake City and points the finger at the organizations that profit off the struggles of the less fortunate, and look the other way when it comes to the people that need the most help. GRGL has been making waves in the heavy music scene and have made it their goal to bring awareness to social issues through their music. The band members have also stated that they choose to be called “GRGL” (gurgle, described by the band as) “the sound of the future”. You be the judge. Here’s some heavy awareness music.
